Game Gear / ゲームギア

Picture of Game Gear

The Game Gear is the first handheld created by Sega, with an 8-bit processor and a color screen, trying to capture the Game Boy market share.

The Game Gear ended up being the second best-selling portable compared to the Game Boy, Atari Lynx and the NEC TurboExpress, but the difference to the Game Boy was very large, despite the good graphics, the portable was widely criticized for the high use of batteries that the device asked, requiring 6 AA batteries that lasted an average of 3 to 4 hours, against 4 AA batteries that lasted twice as long.

Its best-selling game was Sonic 2, with over 400,000 units.

Game Gear sold 10 million units worldwide, being discontinued by Sega in April 1997.

Release date: October 6, 1990
