Sega CD / Mega CD

The Sega CD (also known as Mega-CD), was an accessory for the Mega Drive released on December 12, 1991 and that brought cd-rom support in addition to extra processors to increase the graphics power of the Sega console and thus compete with the Super Nintendo.

It had a Motorola 68000 processor running at 12MHz (the Mega Drive ran at 7MHz) and 64kbit of internal memory for saving games. In addition to games, it could play audio cd and cd+g.

Its best-selling game was Sonic CD, which sold 1.5 million units.

It was officially discontinued in 1996, selling approximately 2.24 million units worldwide.
