Atari 2600 / Atari Video Computer System
The Atari 2600, also known as the Atari VCS (Video Computer System), is a console developed by Atari and released on September 11, 1977 for a price of $199. Although not the first, it was the video game that popularized the use of cartridges for game distribution.
It was a huge success in the early 80's, first by bringing conversions of arcade hits like Space Invaders, and later by games like Pitfall!, Enduro, River Raid, H.E.R.O, Adventure, Yar's Revenge, Frostbite, etc...
It was officially discontinued in January 1992 and sold around 30 million units. Its best selling game was Pac-man with 7 million units.
