Playstation / PS1 / プレイステーション

Picture of Playstation

The Playstation was Sony's first console, released on December 3, 1994 in Japan and September 9, 1995 in the United States.

Its origin was unusual, at first the Playstation would be a CD expansion for the Super Nintendo, containing some improvements to improve the hardware as Sega did with the Sega CD for the Mega Drive. However, Nintendo ended up changing its mind during development and did not want the project anymore because of some commercial agreements that it did not want.

With the cancellation of that project, Ken Kutaragi convinced Sony executives to continue with the project as an independent console, thus being born the Playstation.

Sony's device revolutionized the market in the 90s and was a resounding success, managing to sell more than 100 million units around the world, breaking all records at the time.
